Sustainable Interiors: Low-VOC Paints, Recycled Aluminium and Cleaner Materials

Around the world, interior design is moving towards materials and choices that are healthier for the people inside and lighter on the environment. Most of these ideas are practical and affordable, and they are easiest to apply when you plan them at the start of a project.

Paints and finishes with fewer fumes

Paints, varnishes and polishes release volatile organic compounds (VOCs), the chemicals behind the strong smell of fresh paint. Low-VOC and water-based products release less, so the room is more comfortable to live in sooner. Ask for the VOC information on the product data sheet, and ventilate the room well while painting and drying.

Boards and plywood with low emissions

Plywood, MDF and particle boards use glues that can release formaldehyde. Look for boards sold with a low-emission grade (commonly stated as E1 or better), and for sealed edges in kitchens and wardrobes. This matters most in bedrooms and in homes with children or people with allergies.

Aluminium is a good material to recycle

Aluminium can be recycled again and again without losing its quality, and recycling it takes far less energy than producing new metal. Aluminium windows, partitions and frames are also durable and low-maintenance, which means fewer replacements over the years.

Light, air and energy

  • Use LED lighting, with dimmers and warm-to-neutral colour tones where you relax.
  • Plan for daylight: light colours, clear or frosted glass partitions and well-placed windows reduce the need for lamps in the day.
  • Plan cross-ventilation and use ceiling fans so that the AC runs less.
  • Choose efficient appliances and place the refrigerator and oven away from heat sources.

Durable choices beat disposable ones

  • Good hardware and sturdy carcass material mean cabinets last longer and need fewer replacements.
  • Simple, timeless designs age better than trends that you will want to change in a few years.
  • Modular furniture can be reconfigured, repaired or moved when you shift homes.
  • Choose timber that is certified or reclaimed where possible, and be careful about what is hidden inside cheap furniture.

Where to start

You do not need to change everything. Pick two or three upgrades that matter most to your family, such as low-VOC paint in bedrooms, low-emission boards in the kitchen and wardrobes, and LED lighting throughout.
