Aluminium and glass partitions divide an office quickly, keep the space bright and are easy to change later. The details below decide whether they also feel solid and last.

The main types

• Fixed partitions: glass fixed into aluminium frames, the simplest and most economical.
• Cabins with doors: a partition with a hinged or sliding door for a manager's room or meeting room.
• Frameless glass: toughened glass with minimal metal fittings, a cleaner look at a higher cost.
• Sliding partitions: useful where you want to open two rooms into one.

Glass: thickness and type

Office partitions typically use toughened (tempered) glass, which is several times stronger than ordinary glass and breaks into small blunt pieces. Ask for the thickness in millimetres in the quote, and for toughened glass where people can lean on or bump the partition. Frosted, tinted or film-covered glass gives privacy for cabins and meeting rooms.

Frames and doors

• Aluminium sections come in different thicknesses. A heavier section feels sturdier and costs more; ask which section is quoted.
• Check the finish (powder-coated or anodised) and the colour you want.
• For doors, ask about the hinge or floor-spring type and the lock. These are the parts that wear out first.

How the price is calculated

Partitions are usually priced per square foot of finished area, so the price depends on the section, the glass and the doors you choose. Measure the length and height you need, then ask each supplier to quote the same specification so the numbers can be compared. Doors, locks and any special glass are often priced separately.
