Inverter ACs and Star Ratings: How to Choose and Save on Electricity

In a hot city the AC is often the biggest part of the electricity bill. Choosing the right type and size, and running it sensibly, makes a bigger difference than most people expect.

How an inverter AC differs

A non-inverter (fixed-speed) AC switches its compressor fully on and off to hold the temperature. An inverter AC changes the compressor speed to match how much cooling the room needs. Once the room is cool it runs slowly and steadily instead of stopping and starting, which usually uses less electricity and holds the temperature more evenly.

Star ratings in India

  • The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) labels ACs from 1 to 5 stars. More stars mean the AC is more efficient under the test conditions.
  • The rating is based on a seasonal efficiency figure (ISEER). Compare the number on the label, not only the stars, when two models are close.
  • A higher-star AC costs more to buy and usually less to run. The longer and harder you use it, the faster the extra price pays back.
  • The label is for comparing models. Your own bill depends on the room, the sun, how often you run it and how well it is maintained.

Choosing the tonnage

As a rough guide, about 1 ton suits a small room up to around 120 sq ft, 1.5 ton suits a medium room, and 2 ton suits a large room or one with strong afternoon sun, many people in it or a top-floor roof above it. A unit that is too small runs flat out and never cools well, and one that is too large wastes money. If you are unsure, ask for a site visit.

Refrigerant

Newer split ACs commonly use R32 refrigerant, which is more efficient than older types and has a lower global-warming effect. Whatever the type, the system should be sealed: topping up gas repeatedly means there is a leak that needs fixing.

Habits that cut the bill

  • Set the temperature around 24 to 26 degrees Celsius with a ceiling fan on, rather than the lowest setting.
  • Clean the filters every few weeks in the season, and service the coils before the hot months.
  • Keep doors and windows closed, and use curtains or reflective film on sun-facing windows.
  • Shade the outdoor unit and keep the space around it clear.
  • Use the sleep or eco mode at night if your AC has one.
