AI CCTV Cameras: What Smart Detection Really Does

Many new CCTV cameras and recorders advertise “AI”. In practice this usually means software that recognises what is moving in the picture, so you are alerted about people and vehicles instead of every leaf, shadow or insect.

Common smart features

  • Person and vehicle detection: tells people and vehicles apart from other motion, which greatly reduces false alerts.
  • Line crossing and intrusion zones: you draw a line or an area on the picture and get an alert only when someone crosses it.
  • Loitering and object detection: alerts when someone stays in an area for a long time, or when an object is left behind or removed.
  • Number-plate recognition: reads vehicle plates at gates and parking entries. It needs the right camera angle and lighting.
  • Face detection: finds faces in the picture to make searching recordings quicker. This raises privacy questions, so use it carefully.
  • Smart search: lets you search the recording for people or vehicles instead of watching hours of video.

Where the intelligence runs

  • In the camera (edge AI): alerts even if the recorder is basic, and less load on the network.
  • In the recorder (NVR): one device handles the analysis for several cameras. Check how many cameras it can analyse at once.
  • In the cloud: needs the internet and often a subscription, and your video is processed on someone else’s servers.

Limits to keep in mind

  • AI is not perfect. Rain, glare, poor night lighting or a bad camera angle can cause missed detections and false alerts.
  • A smart feature cannot rescue a poorly placed camera. Position and lighting still decide the quality of the picture.
  • Alerts only help if someone sees them, so set who receives notifications and test them.

Privacy and good practice

  • Do not point cameras into a neighbour’s home or at bathrooms and bedrooms.
  • Prefer local storage where you can, and use strong passwords with updated software.
  • Tell household staff and visitors where cameras are.

Questions to ask before you buy

  • Which smart features are included, and do any need a subscription?
  • Is the analysis done in the camera, the recorder or the cloud?
  • How many days of recording will the hard disk hold?
  • Is there a warranty and local service after installation?
