AC Not Cooling? Seven Checks Before You Call a Technician
In a hot, humid city an AC that stops cooling is more than an inconvenience. Before you book a visit, these checks sometimes solve the problem in minutes.
Seven quick checks
- Mode and temperature: confirm the remote is set to cool, the temperature is lower than the room, and the fan is not on auto-dry or fan-only.
- Remote and power: replace the remote's batteries and check the plug and the circuit breaker.
- Indoor filter: a clogged filter chokes airflow. Remove it, wash it gently and dry it before putting it back.
- Outdoor unit: make sure the fan is running and nothing blocks the unit; dust, leaves or a cover stop it from releasing heat.
- Room conditions: close doors and windows, and check that the AC is the right size for the room and not facing direct afternoon sun without curtains.
- Ice on the pipe or unit: switch the AC off for a few hours so it thaws, then try again. Repeated icing needs a technician.
- Water leaking from the indoor unit: this usually means a blocked drain pipe or a dirty filter.
When to call a technician
- The outdoor fan or compressor does not start.
- A hissing sound, an oily residue on pipes or ice that keeps returning, which can point to a refrigerant leak.
- Strange smells, loud rattling or the breaker tripping when the AC starts.
- Cooling that is weak even after cleaning the filters.
Do not top up gas by yourself or let anyone add gas without finding the leak first; refilling a leaking system only works for a short time.
How often to service
A service before the hot season, and another if you use the AC heavily, keeps the coils and drain clean and helps the unit cool efficiently. A jet service washes the indoor and outdoor coils with water pressure and is a common choice for a yearly clean.
We service and repair split and window ACs in Guntur and Vijayawada. Jet service, check-up and gas refill prices are on the AC repair page, and the technician confirms any extra parts before replacing them.
